Moments that seemed nonsensical and random suddenly became deep. Similar to those games, the plot of Death Stranding became much more hard-hitting and meaningful to me once the credits had rolled and I began reflecting on everything in hindsight. Examining the reasons, I can imagine I felt this way when playing the Metal Gear Solid games for the first time (especially my favorites ones). Something I felt while playing the game was that the story was a bit frustrating until the final hours. Some moments make me momentarily embarrassed that I consider him my primary creative inspiration, while others left an emotional impression on me that lasted weeks. I fully admit that it’s flawed it’s Kojima both at his most brilliant and his most stupid. That said, I really loved the story and characters in Death Stranding. I would even go as far as to say that doing those things was more fun than progressing the story, because as you expand the Chiral Network in the areas you’ve already visited, the game becomes way more open to experimentation on the player’s part. At first I just took the optional stuff that was on my way while doing the main story, but not long after I would take hours at a time in between story segments just to focus on building out the world and doing optional stuff. In Death Stranding, I found myself constantly getting side-tracked by addictive side quests from the very beginning. In addition, side quests are much better integrated in Death Stranding than in The Phantom Pain. The quests are usually just built around the mechanics and the open world, making it better as an open world game almost by definition. Death Stranding, by comparison, is much more organic. TPP felt kind of segmented because of how the game was broken up into scripted quests (albeit with tons of room for improvisation) and loading screens. If you’ve played a Kojima game before, you may know what I’m talking about, but that quirkiness and charm is more than ever used to serve the gameplay and immersion.ĭeath Stranding is also Kojima’s second open world game after The Phantom Pain. Everything feels so alive and brimming with personality.

Kojima Productions really did everything they could to make the game world as authentic and alive as possible – not just through spectacle and movie sequences, but through small details in the gameplay and interface. I got so fucking absorbed into Death Stranding. The game very slowly opens up after a lengthy prologue and first chapter, and by Chapter 3 or so the gameplay is totally engrossing in a way I haven’t experienced before. It’s the exact thing people were worried about: Walking for minutes at a time, hoping to get to the end so you can see more cutscenes. The first few hours of Death Stranding (consisting basically of what was marketed pre-release until the last few months) are not immediately fun. I hoped that Death Stranding would be more accessible in this regard. For years I’ve been trying to get fellow gamer and movie buff friends into the Metal Gear Solid games, and it’s always been the same excuse: There are too many games, they’re all interconnected and some of them seem (or in some cases are) too outdated. But to me, this seemed like Kojima’s chance to finally reach a bigger audience. Maybe not for myself – I knew I would enjoy the game personally on at least some levels. I went into it hopeful but a bit worried. Its advertising was more reminiscent to that of an art film, but the comparison is undeserved since Death Stranding did very little to advertise its gameplay. The critic reviews were even mixed to some extent (a first for a Kojima game, I believe), and the game’s marketing is ambiguous in a way AAA game marketing campaigns have never been. Still, who can blame them? The game is fucking polarizing. Now that we’ve all played it and all… I mean, I assumed we had all played it, but several of my fellow Kojima/MGS fans have simply put it off for one reason or another. Even with the giant pauses on this blog, I knew I had to write something on here about Death Stranding at some point.
